Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration and 1839 Date, attributed to Smith & Day, Norwalk, CT, 1839, finely-potted pitcher with ovoid body, tapered collar, and tooled accents, decorated with a stylized design of foliate motifs emanating from a flower blossom, above the date "1839". A difficult-to-find form for this maker, particularly when dated. A shallow 1" chip to underside at edge. Other shallow chipping to base. A 3/4" chip to interior of rim. A thin, 5" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim and a second thin 5" crack from rim, both flanking the spout. Series of faint spider lines to right side of pitcher, which do not appear to visible on the interior. H 11 3/4".
