One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, James River Valley of Virginia origin, circa 1830-1850, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a vertical brushed cobalt leaf design. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A 3" in-the-firing separation descending from rim on interior, not visible on exterior. Shallow chipping to edge of shoulder molding. Two chips to one handle, one of which is very small. Minor wear to edge of opposite handle. A very faint spider line on underside, not visible on interior.
