Rare Glazed Redware Inkstand with Carved Star Decoration, Signed "F*S* 1811", probably Pennsylvania origin, possibly Somerset County, PA, 1811, slab-constructed inkstand resting on four feet with elaborate carved star decoration to reverse and sides, scalloped carving to edges, and carved boy's head finial to right corner. Surface decorated with dark-green copper-oxide slip and covered in a heavy lead glaze. Incised on underside "F*S* 1811". The star decoration on this example is reminiscent of pieces produced in Somerset County, PA. Excellent form with exceptionally early date. Provenance: Recently discovered in the Midwestern U.S. Missing inkwells and sanders. Missing one head-form finial. Loss to edge of central hole. Two cracks to top, measuring 1 3/4" and 1". Other very minor wear. L 7 3/4" ; H 2 7/8".
