Fine and Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, probably Peter Cross, Hartford, CT, circa 1806-1808, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flower with impressed circular details throughout. Incised accents to interiors of petals and leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A striking and unusual design. Hartford, CT potter, Peter Cross, frequently combined freehand incising with impressed circular details, as seen on this jar. Large base chips. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing contact mark to one side, which includes shallow surface chips. A 5/8" rim chip and other small rim chips.
