Rare Lead-and-Manganese-Glazed Redware Hunt Scene Pitcher with Incised Details, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO", circa 1870, molded pitcher with twig-form handle, decorated on two sides with a relief design of hounds overtaking a stag and boar. Relief grape vine decoration at shoulder. Surface decorated with heavy manganese streaks and covered in a clear lead glaze. This example includes rarely-found, hand-incised details to the animal's faces and feet. Underside impressed with John Bell maker's mark. The clay composition of this pitcher includes a typical red earthenware body with some added light-colored clay, creating an appealing scroddled appearance, which is most evident on the underside. A small restored spout chip and a shallow 1" restored area to rim. An additional small rim chip and other typical, minor rim wear. Some light wear to incised features on animals. Other typical surface abrasions. In-the-firing contact marks in the form of shallow chips to underside of foot. H 7 3/4".
