Fine Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug, Stamped "J.P. BODIE, / MAKER", Kirksey's Crossroads, Edgefield District, South Carolina origin, circa 1870, ovoid jug with tapered spout and thin, applied strap handle, the surface covered in a green alkaline glaze with large run descending from the shoulder. Impressed at the shoulder with the mark of Jesse P. Bodie, used at his shop at Kirksey's Crossroad, Edgefield County, South Carolina. Excellent glaze and form. A 5/8" crack at base on front, extending across underside, and several inches onto reverse, where it forms a curved shape below the handle. A tight V-shaped line extends off from this crack on the reverse, measuring approximately 3 1/2". A chip to spout. Some small base chips, some of which occurred in the firing. H 13".
