Exceptional Stoneware Cream Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "CLARK & CO. / ROCHESTER," circa 1838-1846, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, stepped rim, and lug handles, decorated with a large flowering plant bearing two multi-petaled flowers and a hanging flower bud or piece of fruit. Decoration includes wonderful, heavily-striped details to flowers and bud, including overlying dashed accents. This treatment is the first we have seen on a piece of Rochester stoneware. Slip-trailed "5" above. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Excellent size, color, and maker. The outstanding decoration on this jar ranks among the finest Rochester floral designs we have ever offered. A 1" filled and colored spot to midsection on front. Two minor in-the-firing chips to underside at edge. H 13 1/8".
