Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. / PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled cobalt design of a flying eagle with arrows, freehand stripes and vining, and a stenciled "4" with flourishes at base. Chips to one handle, one of which is glazed over. A 1 1/2" salt drip near base on side of jar. Some shallow chip to interior of rim. A small contact mark near base on reverse. A minor chip to shoulder molding on reverse. A tight 11" line to right of decoration. A 3" surface line on underside, continuning 7" up front of jar, where it forms a Y. This line is not visible on the interior.
