Outstanding Twenty-Gallon "James Hamilton & Co. / Greensboro, PA," Stenciled Stoneware Crock, circa 1875, straight-sided crock with rounded and tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and large lug handles, decorated top to bottom with an elaborate stenciled rose design, surrounding the words "James Hamilton & Co. / Greensboro, PA," the number "20" in stenciled block numbers, various stenciled flourishes, and a line of freehand vining. Additional freehand stripes below rim and at base. The abundant and crisp stenciling covering the front of this crock make it an exceptional example of Western PA stoneware. Reglued and colored wedge at base on reverse, continuing onto underside. Additional crack on underside. Hairlines at base on sides of crock. Y-shaped hairline under one handle. Small chip to end of one handle. H 23 1/2".
