Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "BROWN BROTHERS / HUNTINGTON L.I.," New York State origin, circa 1863-1870, cylindrical crock with tooled midsection, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a floral design consisting of three blossoms and a conical flower extending from a central stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Strong decoration with excellent color. Provenance: Donald Matties Collection. Literature: Pictured on p. 42 of USEFUL ART: LONG ISLAND POTTERY, Cynthia Arps Corbett, Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1985. Excellent condition with some mottling to clay and a faint 3 1/2" hairline from rim on front.
