Rare Three-Gallon Three-Piece Stoneware Filtering Water Cooler with Cobalt Clover Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1860, cylindrical cooler with applied lug handles and circular bunghole, fitted with an ovoid filter with perforated tubular extension, the cooler and filter both with brushed two-stemmed clover designs. Interior of filter includes original disc-shaped stoneware insert with original charcoal filtering medium. The cooler and the filter are different colors and may have been placed in different parts of the kiln during firing, or in different firings. Regardless, based on the distinctive capacity mark found on both, they were made at the same pottery during the same time period. Cooler itself with crazing and hairlines throughout as well as two small chips to bunghole. Filter top and filtering insert in excellent, essentially as-made condition. H (or cooler with filtering top) 22 1/4".
