Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Large Cobalt Owl and Dogs Decoration, Stamped "H.B. PFALTZGRAFF / YORK, PA," circa 1870-1889, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large folk art decoration of an owl perched on a tree branch, flanked by two small dogs. This crock is the first Pfaltzgraff example we have seen bearing the pottery's iconic owl design flanked by two dogs. Outstanding decoration with excellent color. This important example of Pfaltzgraff stoneware is in need of a good restoration. Large cracks and significant exfoliation, including a large reglued section on right side of crock, one handle chip, a small glazed-over rim chip on reverse, and some staining to reverse.
