Unusual Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the James River Valley of Virginia, circa 1825-1835, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, thin squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large brushed design of two graduated blossoms extending from a leafy stem. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals, with additional cobalt brushed over top of one handle. Incised "5" under one handle. Two small chips to one handle, one of which occurred in-the-firing. An in-the-firing chip and minor nick to edge on underside. A very faint Y-shaped line across underside.
