Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double-Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1850, cylindrical crock with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of two crossed birds perched on a tree branch. Crisp decoration with heavy shading to birds' bodies. Excellent size and desirable maker. 2 1/2" hairline from rim on side of crock. Several surface flakes to one handle. Otherwise excellent condition.
