Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Fuchsia Decoration, Stamped "HAMILTON & CO / Greensboro, PA.," William Leet Hamilton, Greensboro, PA, circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and large, ribbed lug handles, decorated across the front with a boldly-brushed vine bearing two fuchsia blossoms. Shoulder impressed with large, early oval mark of William Leet Hamilton above a four-gallon capacity. Interesting fingerprints in Albany slip on underside, which presumably occurred when the jar was being lined with slip. A fine and visually-appealing example of early Greensboro, PA stoneware. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Florida. Thin tight crack extending 8 1/2" down right side of jar's front and 6" across underside. Otherwise excellent condition.
