Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER," circa 1860, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a finely slip-trailed design of a flowering plant featuring alternating oval and radiating petals and a cross-hatched center. Slip-trailed "4" above. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A visually-striking design exhibiting outstanding color. Floral designs of this particular style are rare among Burger's work. Spidering sealed cracks, some of which are thin and tight, located on the left side of churn and extending onto reverse. Filled 1 1/4" x 1" rim chip on side of churn. Two other small filled rim chips. Typical wear on interior rim for lid. Chip to one handle. Small chips and wear to inner rim for lid. A few minor spots of unobtrusive fry to cobalt and some minor wear to cobalt.
