Rare Miniature Stoneware Presentation Churn with Freehand Initials "M.R.," probably Beaver, PA, third quarter 19th century, semi-ovoid form with flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with brushed cobalt swags on the front and back. Base with brushed cobalt initials, "M.R.". The similarity of the color of the churn and style of decoration to signed Russell examples from Beaver, PA, suggest that this miniature may be have been made by a member of the Russell family, and that the initials may refer to a family member. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Faint Albany slip glaze to interior. 5/8" in-the-firing stone ping to reverse at shoulder. Otherwise as-made condition with some in-the-firing wrinkles to surface. H 5 3/4”.
