Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Large Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD. / BURLINGTON, VT.," circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, profusely-decorated with a very large slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head, large rack, and spotted body, standing atop a hill flanked by a fence and large bush. Foreground elaborately-decorated with shrubs and grasses. A visually-stunning design, executed in dark, thick trails of cobalt slip. 4 1/4" hairline from rim to left of maker's mark. 5" crack from rim to right of deer, near edge of handle. 2 3/4" X-shaped surface line on underside, not visible on interior and possibly in-the-firing. Small shallow flake to edge of handle. Two very minor nicks to opposite handle. Exfoliation to interior base.
