Five-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Dcoration of a Quail on Stump with Flower, Stamped "J. BURGER JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y., " circa 1885, ovoid jar wit htooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a crisply slip-trailed design of a quail with turned head and heavily-detailed body, perched on a stump beside a star-shaped flower. Excellent color and decoration. Slip-trailed "5" at shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Professionally-restored crack extending through right side of flower, with minor touch-up to flower. Professional restoration to broken and reglued pieces in underside. Additional restoration to base and reverse.
