Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Floral Decoration, Rockingham County, VA origin, mid 19th century, ovoid pitcher with tall collar and tooled rim, decorated with a large brushed flower extending from a leafy stem, the blossom with splayed petals and scalloped tip. Collar decorated with brushed dashes. Decoration is very light, and may be either cobalt or manganese. Excellent form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which descended in a Virginia family. Excellent, as-made condition with a tiny spout nick and tiny rim nick, as well as a 2 1/2" in-the-firing separation line on interior of collar, which is not visible on the exterior.
