Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "E. NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1885, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with slip-trailed design of a heavily-detailed leaf accented with spots trails. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid. Desirable form with excellent color. Good condition. Some fry to heavier slip-trailed areas of decoration. Three chips and a tiny nick to lid. 1 1/2" in-the-firing chip / contact mark at base on reverse. 2 1/4" salt drip near base on side of churn. 1 1/4" chipped area to base, probably in-the-firing. A 3/4" in-the-firing chip to base on side of churn. A minor chip on interior of rim. Several nicks on inner rim where the lid rests.
