Rare Stoneware Jar with Impressed and Coggled Decoration, Stamped "WARNE & LETTS 1806 / S. AMBOY. N. JERSY," Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, circa 1806, approximately two-gallon jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and loop handles, the front featuring two large impressed cresents with scalloped edges and cobalt-filled interiors. Rim with coggled column motif with sawtoothed border. Shoulder lightly-impressed "WARNE & LETTS 1806 / S. AMBOY. N. JERSY". A fine example of early New Jersey stoneware, by one of the state's most desirable makers. Provenance: Ex-Kravetz Antiques, Freehold, NJ. Thin spidering inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse, descending from rim approximately 5 1/2". Two short minor lines at base. Tiny chips to base. Small, in-the-firing chip / contact mark to one side.
