Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Running Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1860, large-sized cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder and squared rim, decorated with a very large slip-trailed design of a crested and fan-tailed bird in running stance, atop a vine with fern-like end. Large slip-trailed wreath surrounding the maker's mark. Excellent size and decoration. Fry to cobalt. Base chip. Small salt drip at base, to left of decoration. H 18 3/4".
