Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Quail and Foliate Design, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a turned head quail with crest and striped details, perched on a four-leafed plaint with heavily-shaded highlights. Wide, jagged crack from rim, extending a few inches onto underside. Some minor chipping to inner molding of rim, where a lid would rest.
