Rare Glazed Redware Hunt Scene Pitcher, Incised "Bell," attributed to Solomon Bell, Strasburg, VA, circa 1865, molded pitcher with twig-form handle and raised designs of dogs attacking a boar and deer, the surface covered in clear lead glaze over an olive and orange ground. Underside incised "Bell" in script; appears to match the signature of Solomon Bell found on other signed examples of his work. Copied from a form designed by mold-maker Charles Coxon for the Bennett Pottery in Baltimore. For similar examples, see Comstock, p. 220. Provenance: Ex-Kelly Young. Heavy chips to interior base. In-the-firing lines on underside, which do not extend through to interior. Rim chip, tiny base chip, additional larger chip near base, and small spots of wear to surface. H 7 1/2".
