Extremely Rare Glazed Redware Jar, Stamped "ASHBAUGH," Frederick, MD, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and tall collar culminating in a rounded rim, the interior and exterior covered in a speckled brownish lead-based glaze colored with manganese or iron. Underside impressed with the mark "ASHBAUGH" in large capital letters. H.E. Comstock's definitive book, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, lists John Ashbaugh as a potter born in 1809 and active in Frederick, MD, circa 1860. At the time of the book's publication, no signed examples of John Ashbaugh's work had surfaced. This jar is probably the only such example known. Provenance: Recently found in Frederick County, MD. Wear to top of rim. Two small base chips. A small glaze flake near shoulder. H 8 1/2".
