Rare Shenandoah Valley Redware Spittoon with Marbled Glaze, Stamped Twice on Underside "BAECHER / WINCHESTER VA," circa 1880, cylindrical form with rounded foot, tooled midsection, and carved oval opening at shoulder, the surface covered in an attractive marbled glaze featuring streaked manganese applied over cream-colored slip. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. A nice example of this form by one of the Shenandoah Valley's most revered potters. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example consigned from Maryland. Flakes to glaze. 2" base chip. Additional 1 1/2" reglued piece at base. H 3 7/8" ; Diameter 9 1/4".
