Very Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tree of Life Decoration, Signed in Cobalt Script "H Lowndes / Manufacturer / Petersburg / Va," circa 1845, with vase-like form including a flared base, ovoid body, and semi-squared rim, one side decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed cobalt tree of life design. Opposite side features Henry Lowndes' signature in cobalt script extending from shoulder to base. Signed examples of Lowndes stoneware are highly unusual in a half-gallon size. Provenance: Recently found in the Midwestern U.S. Bloated spots to surface. 1 1/4" rim chip on side of jar. H 7 3/4".
