Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swan Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a cobalt design of a swan with spotted and striped wing, swimming on stylized water. This desirable Cowden & Wilcox design is difficult-to-find on pieces of this small size. Excellent color. 2" long shallow chip to rim above one handle. Additional rim chips, including several small chips to interior of rim. 3 1/2" and 2 3/4" hairlines from rim on reverse. 3" crack extending from rim to left side of one handle. H 9 3/4".
