Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Game Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.," circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall flaring collar, decorated with an artistic brushed and slip-trailed cobalt design of a game bird perched on a plant. The bird is depicted with raised foot and wing, a turned head with crest, and neck and body accented with cobalt spots. Provenance: Lynn White Collection, Readfield, ME. Significant restoration to surface and handles. Restoration does not touch decoration. H 18".
