Early Lanier Meaders Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Cleveland, GA origin, circa 1865, ovoid jug with narrow spout and applied handle, decorated with applied facial features and a mouth with rock teeth, including darker-colored buck teeth. Incised "Lanier Meaders" on underside. A fine example by this noted ceramic folk artist. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor directly from Meaders in the 1960's for $20. In-the-firing lines in underside. Chip to right edge of lower right eyelid, which may have occurred in the firing. H 9 1/4".
