Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / NEW-YORK," circa 1830, semi-ovoid jar with rounded shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with cobalt brushwork around the impressed mark of Clarkson Crolius, Jr. Reverse with semi-circular cobalt brushwork. Handles with cobalt stripes. Unusual form in Crolius stoneware. Excellent color. Provenance: Sanford Smith, New York, New York. 2 1/4" x 1 5/8" base flake on reverse. Other very minor chipping to base. Crock does not sit flat. 1 1/4" faint line above one handle, which does not extend through to interior. 4 3/4" Y-shaped hairline under one handle, which does not extend through to interior. 4" hairline from rim on reverse, which does not extend through to interior. H 14".
