Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Bird and Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with applied lug handles, decorated with a large cobalt design of a leafy branch holding a bird with turned head, reaching for a cluster of grapes. Cowden & Wilcox stoneware with decoration of this size and quality is unusual. The subject matter, in which both a bird and grapes are depicted, is considered very rare. Provenance: Part of a collection consigned from Oregon. CONDITION UPDATE: Jar is out of round. Small y-shaped line under one handle. Restoration to hairline and light exfoliation to right side of jar's front, touching edge of decoration. Hairlines on underside. Restoration to exfoliation under right handle and including ends of right handle. H 13".
