Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Impressed and Ochre-Highlighted Decoration, Stamped "WARNE & LETTS 1806 / S AMBOY N JERSY," ovoid jar with tall, flaring collar, decorated with an impressed crescent brushed over in brownish slip. Shoulder decorated with heavy incised banding. A column design with saw-toothed edge is coggled at the rim and below the shoulder banding. Extending through this decoration across the midsection is the coggled signature "WARNE & LETTS 1806 / S AMBOY N JERSY." Examples by this potting firm are highly prized by collectors today. A fine example of early New Jersey stoneware. 3 3/4" and 3 1/2" cracks from rim on reverse. Rim chips. 1 1/8" chip of underside at edge. Two other small base chips. 3/4" stone ping on underside. A few very faint lines, which do not extend through to interior. Small worn spot on reverse. H 8".
