Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, large-sized ovoid form with pouring spout and wood-and-metal bail handle, decorated on the front with two large brushed cobalt tulips flanking the spout. Base of spout decorated with wreath-like brushwork. Reverse decorated with a large cobalt tulip. One of a small number of Cowden & Wilcox batter pails in this size known. Provenance: Recently discovered in a basement in Michigan. Two small spout chips and one small glazed-over spout chip. H 11 1/2".
