Rare Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Purplish Slip Decoration, attributed to Clarkson Crolius Sr. or Jr., Manhattan, NY, circa 1820, approximately four gallon ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and open loop handles, brush-decorated in an unusual purplish slip with a drape design on the front and back, as well as under each handle. The slip used to decorated this jar appears to be a mixture of cobalt and manganese. Attractive coloration. Thin crack in one handle. Some thin lines in collar visible on exterior, as well as several spidering lines visible on interior of collar only. Spidering lines on underside, most of which do not extend through to interior. Approximately 4 1/2" spidering line near base. Some additional lines, mostly at base. Approximately 6" line on interior, which does not extend through to exterior. Chipping to base Small rim chip. H 13". ($200-$300)
