Rare Shenandoah Valley Stoneware Preserve Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Rockingham Co., VA origin, circa 1860, squat-formed, highly ovoid jar with squared collar and applied ribbed handles, decorated with a flowering vine design on the front and back, consisting of a slip-trailed cobalt stem with three brushed blossoms and several leaves sprouting from it. A highly-prize form, distinctive to one county in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Excellent color and strong decoration. This example features a highly unusual five-petaled floral motif, which is previously undocumented on preserve jars from this region. Recently discovered in Delaware. Small rim chips and small chip to shoulder molding. 5 1/2� horizontal Y-shaped surface line to shoulder, which does not extend through to interior. 5� hairline on underside, continuing 4 1/2� up the jar’s side to right of one handle. Two small spots of in-the-firing salt residue on one side. H 6 3/4�. Width (at opening) 5 7/8� ; Width (at base) 6 3/8�.
