Exceedingly Rare and Important Painted Redware Figure of a Spaniel, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," Dated 1874, molded figure of a seated spaniel on base with white-painted body embellished with black sponging. Collar, chain, and locket, painted gold, mouth painted red, and border of base painted brown. Underside impressed with the mark of Shenandoah Valley master potter, John Bell, which reads "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," along with the incised date "1874". One of a small number of signed Bell family spaniels known. Easily one of the finest examples of John Bell pottery to be offered at auction in recent years. Wear to paint. H 9 1/4".
