Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, NY," circa 1885, large-sized, cylindrical jug with rounded shoulder and tall squared spout, decorated with a very large, brushed and slip-trailed cobalt design of a paddletail bird perched on a flowering vine. This popular Utica decoration is rarely found on a jug of this size. The bird design extends approximately 11" across the front of the jug. Excellent, as-made condition with a 7 3/4" salt drip on right side of jug. Spout slumped during the firing. H 16 3/4".
