Extremely Rare Glazed Redware Flask with Incised Floral Design, Incised "Charles / Joseph / April 5th / 1869," Indiana origin, wheel-thrown flask with flattened sides and semi-squared rim, covered in a speckled reddish-brown glaze composed of lead colored with iron or manganese. One side incised "Charles / Joseph / April 5th / 1869" Opposite side incised with a flowering plant motif. Excellent form and decoration. Charles Joseph is listed in the 1870 Census of Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, as a potter, age 47, born in France. Signed Midwestern redware is considered difficult-to-find. Excellent condition with small flecks on glaze loss to spout, a small fleck of glaze loss to base, and a small in-the-firing chip on underside with a short faint line extending through it. H 6".
