Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "EXCELSIOR WORKS / ISAAC HEWITT, JR. / RICES LANDING, PA," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large sweeping tulip design between brushed cobalt stripes. Isaac Hewitt, Jr. maker's stenciling below and a brushed 6 with swags at base. A fine example by this desirable maker. Exfoliation to rim, handle, and shoulder. Sealed and colored top-to-bottom crack on front extending onto underside and 8" up reverse side of crock. Glazed-over stone ping on reverse. H 16 3/4".
