Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Large Cobalt Bird Decoration, possibly A.O. Whittemore, Havana, NY, circa 1860, straight-sided crock with applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed cobalt bird with turned head, tall crest, and striped body, perched on a leafy, heavily-shaded branch. Fry to cobalt. 3 1/4" line from rim on front. Thin, in-the-firing flake to front. 2 1/2" vertical surface line extending up from base on front and extending 1 1/2" onto underside. A few small stone pings on right side of crock. 1" x 1 1/2" flake off base on reverse. Small chip on interior of rim. H 13".
