Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed cobalt design of a large pheasant perched on a stump. Pheasant depicted with turned head, crest, and long tail, its body detailed with numerous trails of cobalt. Stump situated on an oval section of ground accented with shrubs, grasses, and dotted trails. Highly desirable decoration and maker. Excellent color, form, and size. 2" rim chip. Smaller chips on interior of rim. 4" line from rim on front. 5" line from rim on reverse. H 17 1/2".
