Rare One-Gallon Ovoid Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Stamped "J.W. COWDEN / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1861, ovoid jar with flattened rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed cobalt rooster with comb and long tail, underscored by leaf-like brushwork. Rare maker and decoration. Desirable size. 4" separation line from rim on front, which occurred in the making. Line extends from a glazed-over chip, which also occurred in the making. Stone ping on right side of jar's front. Y-shaped crack at base on side of jar, which continues onto underside. 1 1/4" line from rim above one handle. H 10 1/2".
