Twenty-Gallon Heavily-Stenciled Stoneware Crock with Eagle, Stenciled "J. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1875, very large, straight-sided crock with lug handles, cobalt-decorated with a large stenciled eagle, holding a banner, which "JAS. HAMILTON & CO.". Much of crock's front decorated with various stenciled designs and freehand brushwork. A stenciled "20" on front, and the words "J. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA" stenciled below. Freehand cobalt stripes below rim and at base. Brushed cobalt at handle terminals. An excellent example of the large, eagle-decorated pieces produced in Western Pennsylvania. Mint condition. Height 25".
