Two Stoneware Jugs with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Norton Family, Bennington, VT, 1855-1860, a one-gallon jug with slip-trailed bird-on-branch decoration, stamped "J NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT:," circa 1860; paired with a two-gallon jug with unusual slip-trailed bird-on-branch decoration, stamped with NY State advertising, "VARIETY-STORE / CHERRY-VALLEY," attributed to J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT, circa 1855. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. One-gallon jug in excellent condition with some staining. Two-gallon jug with a 9" vertical crack from rim on reverse, a 1 5/8" x 1 3/4" base flake on reverse, in-the-firing fissures to underside, a minor iron ping above decoration, and staining and wear to surface. H (of larger) 14 1/4".
