Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Rabbit and Floral Decoration, Stamped "JULIUS NORTON. / BENNINGTON VT.," circa 1841-1844, semi-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a delicate cobalt rendering of a leaping rabbit, its hindquarters intersected by a flowering vine with scrolled stem and stamens. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Among the more elaborate Norton rabbit-decorated pieces that we have offered. Two in-the-firing iron pings near base on front. Some mottling/staining to surface. Traces of old gray paint to reverse. H 15 1/2".
