Extremely Rare Bristol-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Lidded Sugar Bowl with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1900, squat-shaped, ovoid form with flaring collar, brush-decorated completely around the body with an undulating flowering vine. Further decorated completely around the collar with stylized floral motifs. Includes fitting, blue-glazed lid with recessed top, possibly original to the bowl, but also possibly from a later date. Outstanding form with wonderful brushwork. Presumably made at one of Western Pennsylvania's late-period potteries and decorated by a skilled craftsman who had worked during the heyday of stoneware production in the region. Sugar bowl in excellent, essentially as-made condition. Lid with a few edge chips and some blistering to glaze on knob. Diam. (at rim) 7 3/8" ; H 6 3/8".
