Exceptional Stoneware Canning Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Freehand and Stenciled Cherries Decoration, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones. / Greensboro Pa.," circa 1870, tapering jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded "wax sealer rim," decorated with a stenciled cluster of cherries flanked by wavy flourishes. Further decorated with a total of six straight and wavy freehand stripes. Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones" near midsection and "Greensboro Pa." at base. Combining the region's prized cherries motif and elaborate top-to-bottom cobalt brushwork, this canning jar ranks among the finest Western Pennsylvania examples of the form that we have offered. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the Washington, PA area. A faint, approximately 5" x 5" X-shaped line on reverse. A minor in-the-firing base chip. Some light staining. H 9 3/8".
