Very Rare Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Ralph J. Grier, East Nottingham Township, Chester County, PA, circa 1880, beehive form with tapering, rounded finial and applied watering trough at base, brush-decorated with a drooping flower extending across the front. Cobalt highlights to edge of trough. Color and decoration lead to a firm attribution to Grier. One of only a small number of chicken waterers by this maker known. A chip to exterior rim of trough, adjacent to a chip on interior. Another chip to base of trough and a minor chip to trough's underside. Two slightly raised cracks above trough, measuring roughly 2 3/4" and 2". Otherwise as-made condition. Overall very nice condition for an often-damaged form used outdoors. H 12".
